Articles about languages, countries and cultures

intersolbloglogo.fw_-300x277 Articles about languages, countries and cultures

I was in the office early one morning when the phone rang “Do you do translations into Swiss?” said the caller. At first, I was surprised, but then I realized that not everyone knows that Switzerland is a multilingual country, where French, German, Italian and Romansh (or Rumantsch), are all official languages. As I would learn soon enough, there were a few things that the average person did not know about other languages, cultures, and countries.

This is when it occurred to me to publish a newsletter about this subject. The first issues were  printed on paper, but the WWW presented new frontiers. Imagine, being able to research a topic, write an article and format and publish within just a few days! This is how a printed newsletter became the InterSol Blog.

The internet has also shrunk our world even further, so it is all the more important to understand what makes us who we are. What are all those components – the language we speak, our beliefs, the cuisine we enjoy, our social habits, music, art and such, that make up what we call “culture”? Scottish historian and essayist, Thomas Carlyle, who was born at the end of the 18th century, defined culture as “… the process by which a person becomes all that they were created capable of being.” Noam Chomsky, contemporary American linguist, philosopher, cognitive scientist, historian, logician, social critic, and political activist said about language that it “…is not just words. It’s a culture, a tradition, a unification of a community, a whole history that creates what a community is. It’s all embodied in a language.”

The goal for this blog is to bring to you a little taste of different languages and cultures and in so doing to promote understanding and enhance world harmony.

I am delighted that you have landed on this page and hope that you will keep coming back.

 Sincerely,

 Susana Turbitt
